wind up, wrap tightly, bind (especially wrapping the head with a turban)
A verb meaning to wrap, wind, or bind something tightly, particularly wrapping the head with a turban. Leviticus 16:4 instructs the high priest to 'wrap his head' with the linen turban on the Day of Atonement. Isaiah 22:18 uses intensive forms to depict God 'winding you up tightly' like a ball to be hurled into exile. The Ketiv reading in Isaiah 62:3 (later corrected) also uses this root. The image is of wrapping something completely, either in honor (turban) or judgment (bound for exile).

Senses
1. sense 1 Leviticus 16:4 prescribes that the high priest 'shall wrap [his head] with (ב) the linen turban' during the Day of Atonement ritual. Isaiah 22:18 uses emphatic repetition: 'he will surely wind you up (צָנוֹף יִצְנָפְךָ צְנֵפָה)'—wrapping you tightly like a ball to throw you away. Isaiah 22:18 appears twice (likely textual variants: וצנוף/צנוף) and Isaiah 62:3 has a Ketiv reading. Spanish enrollar (to roll up, wind) captures the wrapping action.
