limp, walk with a limp (due to injury or disability)
A verb describing the action of limping or walking with impaired gait. Genesis 32:31 explains why Israelites don't eat the thigh sinew: because Jacob was 'limping on his hip' after wrestling with the divine figure. Micah and Zephaniah use the feminine participle as a substantive for 'the lame one,' personifying exiled Judah as a limping sheep that God will gather and restore (Mic 4:6-7; Zeph 3:19). The word evokes both physical disability and metaphorical vulnerability.

Senses
1. sense 1 Genesis 32:31 notes that Jacob was 'limping because of his hip' after the wrestling match at Peniel—the etiology for Israel's dietary practice. Micah 4:6 and 4:7 both use the feminine participle 'the lame one' (הַצֹּלֵעָה) to describe the exiled nation God will gather. Zephaniah 3:19 similarly promises to save 'the lame' and gather the outcast. Spanish coja/cojeando (lame/limping) and French boitant (limping) consistently identify this as impaired walking due to injury.
