Zuph; an Ephraimite ancestor of Samuel; also a district in Benjamin
Zuph names both a person and a place. As a person, he was an Ephraimite (or Levite) ancestor of Elkanah and hence of the prophet Samuel (1 Sam 1:1; 1 Chr 6:26, 35). The land of Zuph was a district in Benjamin's territory where Saul and his servant searched for lost donkeys before encountering Samuel (1 Sam 9:5). The name may connect to the root for 'honeycomb,' though its etymology remains uncertain.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A personal name and territorial designation. As an ancestor of Samuel, Zuph appears in genealogies (1 Sam 1:1; 1 Chr 6:26, 35), and the variant Zophay (1 Chr 6:26) likely refers to the same individual. The 'land of Zuph' (1 Sam 9:5) marks a geographical region in Benjamin. Translations consistently transliterate (eng 'Zuph/Tsuf,' spa 'Tsuf,' fra 'Zuph'), with some showing the variant Zophay for the Chronicles form, reflecting the genealogical and territorial duality of this single name. 5×
