This word denotes the flax plant in its growing state or its processed fibers used as lamp wicks. Exodus 9:31 twice mentions the flax crop destroyed by hail during the seventh plague. Isaiah uses flax wick as a metaphor: the 'smoking flax' (43:17) and 'dimly burning wick' (42:3) represent something fragile, nearly extinguished, yet not completely quenched. The Messiah will not 'break' or 'quench' such faint hope. The material is the same; the application varies from agriculture to household lighting to prophetic metaphor.
