Flax or linen — the plant fiber and the textile woven from it
Covers both the raw flax plant and the finished linen fabric without lexical distinction between them. Rahab hides the Israelite spies under stalks of flax drying on her roof (Josh 2:6), while Samson snaps his bonds of flax as fire consumes them (Judg 15:14). In Hosea, flax appears alongside wool as a valued natural product (Hos 2:7, 11). The Priestly legislation pairs linen and wool in purity laws about garment contamination (Lev 13:47-59) and the prohibition against mixed fabrics (Deut 22:11). Ezekiel's priests must wear linen, not wool, when ministering (Ezek 44:17-18). French 'lin' and German 'Leinen' both derive from the same ancient root as the English word.
Senses
1. flax, linen (material) — Flax as a raw plant and linen as its finished textile product — two stages of the same material that Hebrew does not lexically separate. As a plant, it appears drying on Rahab's roof (Josh 2:6) and catching fire on Samson's bonds (Judg 15:14). As finished cloth, it appears in Priestly legislation governing garment contamination alongside wool (Lev 13:47-59), in the mixed-fabric prohibition (Deut 22:11), and in Ezekiel's priestly dress code (Ezek 44:17-18). Spanish 'lino' and French 'lin' consistently render both senses. 16×
