Inside, inward, within; a directional adverb denoting spatial interiority, especially of the temple.
Formed with the directional he suffix on panim ('face'), penimah literally means 'faceward' from the perspective of one entering — that is, 'toward the inside' or 'within.' The word appears almost exclusively in architectural descriptions of sacred space, especially Solomon's temple (1 Kgs 6:18–30) and Ezekiel's visionary temple (Ezek 40:16; 41:3). Combined with the preposition min it means 'from within' (1 Kgs 6:19, 21), and with lamed it means 'to the inside' (Ezek 41:3; 2 Chr 29:16). Its association with the inner sanctum gives this otherwise mundane spatial term a sacral quality — to go penimah is to approach the holy of holies.
Senses
1. inside, inward — A directional adverb meaning 'inside, inward, within,' built from panim ('face') with the locative he suffix — literally 'faceward' as seen from the entrance. Used predominantly in temple contexts: Solomon's temple interior (1 Kgs 6:18, 19, 21, 30) and Ezekiel's visionary temple (Ezek 40:16; 41:3). With preposition lamed it indicates motion toward the interior ('to inside,' 2 Chr 29:16, 18; Ezek 41:3); with min it denotes origin from within ('from inside,' 1 Kgs 6:19, 21). Also occurs in Leviticus 10:18 for the tabernacle interior and in Psalm 45:14 for the royal palace chambers. 13×
