H6398 H6398
to cleave, split, pierce; in Piel to cut open or through, slice into
A verb denoting the forceful action of splitting or cleaving. In its Qal form it describes ploughing or splitting the earth (Ps 141:7), while the Piel intensifies the image to piercing through organs (Job 16:13; Prov 7:23) or slicing produce into a pot (2 Kgs 4:39). The Spanish 'atraviesa' (pierces through) and 'dan-a-luz' (give birth) capture the range from violent penetration to the parting open in childbirth (Job 39:3). The root shares cognates with Arabic and Aramaic words for cleaving and tilling.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To cleave, split open, or pierce with force. Covers ploughing earth (Ps 141:7), piercing kidneys and liver as figures of devastating attack (Job 16:13; Prov 7:23), slicing gourds into a pot (2 Kgs 4:39), and possibly the bursting open of the womb in birth (Job 39:3). Spanish 'atraviesa' and English 'He-pierces' reflect the violent directional thrust, while 'one-splitting' and 'el-que-ara' show the agricultural application. 5×
