to unfasten, loosen, set free; to release bonds or prisoners
A Hiphil verb meaning to loose what is bound — whether physical fetters, yoke-thongs, or a person held captive. Isaiah 58:6 pairs it with 'break every yoke' in the great fast-day oracle, calling for the loosening of bonds of wickedness. The psalmist celebrates God as the one who 'sets prisoners free' (Ps 146:7) and who sent word to release Joseph from chains (Ps 105:20). Job 6:9 uses it figuratively: 'that he would let loose his hand and cut me off.' Spanish 'desatar' and 'soltando' vividly express the unshackling force of the word.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To unfasten or loosen physical restraints such as thongs, yoke-straps, or bonds of wickedness. Isaiah 58:6 commands loosening (hatter) the thongs of the yoke as part of true fasting. French 'secouer' ('to shake off') and Spanish 'desatar' ('to untie') capture the breaking of physical constraints. The emphasis is on the material bonds rather than the person bound. 5×
