V-Piel-Imperf-3ms  |  10× in 2 senses
To lead or guide, especially to a watering place or resting station; to conduct gently at a measured pace.
A verb whose Piel stem means to lead or guide someone along a journey, often with the connotation of bringing them to water or rest. The most beloved instance is Psalm 23:2, 'He leads me beside still waters,' where the shepherding imagery captures the word's core meaning of guiding to refreshment. God leads his redeemed people (Exod 15:13), and leaders conduct captives to safety (2 Chr 28:15). The single Hitpael occurrence (Gen 33:14) adds a nuance of gentleness -- Jacob will 'lead on slowly' to accommodate the children and nursing flocks.

Senses
1. lead, guide, conduct Piel: to lead, guide, or conduct someone toward a destination, especially a place of water or rest. The root is connected to Arabic manhal 'watering-place,' illuminating the pastoral background. God guides his people in lovingkindness to his holy habitation (Exod 15:13), leads beside still waters (Ps 23:2), and will guide them to springs of water (Isa 49:10). Spanish 'guiar/conducir' and French renderings consistently capture the directional, purposeful leading. Also used of human leaders conducting others (2 Chr 28:15; 32:22).

2. proceed gently, lead on slowly Hitpael: to proceed gently, to lead on at a slow, accommodating pace. In Genesis 33:14, Jacob tells Esau he will 'lead on slowly' (etenaahalah) at the pace of the children and livestock. The reflexive-iterative Hitpael conveys measured, careful movement rather than vigorous marching. German 'gemachlich-ziehen' ('pull along gently') and Spanish 'conducire' reflect this unhurried nuance, distinguishing it from the more active Piel guidance.
