N-ms  |  6× in 1 sense
Heap, mound — especially of waters piled up by divine power at the Red Sea or Jordan crossings.
A masculine noun meaning 'heap' or 'mound,' used almost exclusively for the miraculous heaping up of waters. Its most dramatic appearances describe God's parting of the Red Sea, where the waters stood as a heap (Exod 15:8), and the Jordan crossing, where the waters rose up in a single heap (Josh 3:13, 16). Psalm 78:13 and 33:7 recall these events in worship, using the same noun to evoke God's sovereign power over creation. The one possible non-aquatic use in Isaiah 17:11 ('harvest-heap') is textually uncertain. Spanish 'monton' and French 'monceau' both convey the image of a mass piled high.

Senses
1. heap, mound A heap or mound, characteristically used of waters supernaturally piled up during Israel's foundational salvation events. At the Red Sea the waters 'stood as a heap' (Exod 15:8), and at the Jordan they 'rose up in one heap' (Josh 3:13, 16). The psalms recall this imagery in worship (Ps 33:7; 78:13), making the word a marker of divine power over chaotic waters. Spanish 'monton' and French 'monceau/tas' render the concrete physical image. The possible occurrence in Isaiah 17:11 ('harvest-heap') remains textually disputed.
