harp, lyre — a stringed instrument used in worship, celebration, and courtly music throughout Israel's history
Nevel designates a stringed instrument — variously rendered harp, lyre, or psaltery — whose 27 occurrences span the full arc of Israelite musical life. It first appears in the band of prophets Saul encounters, playing nevel alongside timbrel, flute, and lyre (1 Sam 10:5). David and all Israel played nevalim before the Ark (2 Sam 6:5; 1 Chr 13:8), and Levitical musicians were organized with designated nevel-players for temple worship (1 Chr 15:16, 20, 28; 25:1, 6; 2 Chr 5:12; 29:25). Solomon imported almug wood from Ophir to craft nevalim (1 Kgs 10:12). The prophets condemned its use in self-indulgent revelry: Amos denounced those who 'improvise on the nevel like David' while ignoring ruin (Amos 5:23; 6:5), and Isaiah warned of feasts where 'harp and lyre and wine' reign (Isa 5:12). The instrument likely had a bulging resonance body, distinguishing it from the simpler kinnor. Spanish 'arpa,' French and German 'Harfe' converge on the harp identification.

Senses
1. harp, lyre, psaltery A stringed musical instrument (likely a harp with a bulging resonance body) used in temple worship, royal ceremony, and prophetic activity. Distinguished from the simpler kinnor and typically named alongside it. Central to Levitical temple worship (1 Chr 15:16, 20, 28; 25:1, 6; 2 Chr 5:12; 29:25), introduced in the prophetic band Saul encountered (1 Sam 10:5), and played before the Ark by David and all Israel (2 Sam 6:5). Prophets condemned its misuse in hedonistic revelry (Amos 5:23; 6:5; Isa 5:12). The Psalms celebrate it as an instrument of praise (Ps 33:2; 57:8; 71:22; 150:3). 27×
