Trampling, a trampling-place -- what is trodden underfoot, used literally and figuratively for destruction.
A masculine noun meaning trampling or a place that is trampled underfoot. Isaiah uses it powerfully as an image of total destruction: a vineyard given over to be trampled (Isa 5:5), hills turned into grazing trampled by livestock (Isa 7:25), Assyria as God's agent to make nations 'a trampling like mud in the streets' (Isa 10:6), and a covenant with death that will be trampled (Isa 28:18). Micah 7:10 turns the image on Israel's enemies. Spanish captures this with 'pisoteo/pisoteado' (stampeding/stamped), preserving the visceral, physical quality of the metaphor.
Senses
1. trampling, that which is trampled — The act of trampling or the condition of being trodden underfoot, used both literally and as a figure for utter destruction and humiliation. English 'a-trampling/for-trampling,' Spanish 'pisoteo/para-ser-pisoteados' all reflect the same physical image of being crushed underfoot. The four original clusters differ only in grammatical form (construct, with preposition le-). In Isaiah 5:5 God removes a vineyard's hedge so it becomes a trampling-place; Isaiah 7:25 describes hills given over to livestock trampling; Isaiah 10:6 likens nations to mud trampled in streets; Isaiah 28:18 warns that those who trust in lies will be trampled by God's judgment; Ezekiel 34:19 condemns shepherds whose flocks must drink water muddied by trampling. 7×
