Scroll, written roll — a rolled document of parchment or papyrus used for recording prophecy and law
The standard term for a written scroll in late biblical Hebrew, appearing almost exclusively in prophetic contexts. Its most dramatic appearance is in Jeremiah 36, where Baruch writes Jeremiah's oracles on a scroll that King Jehoiakim methodically cuts and burns — only for the prophet to dictate a replacement. Ezekiel receives a scroll written on both sides with lamentations (Ezek 2:9-3:3), and Zechariah sees a flying scroll of judgment (Zech 5:1-2). The Psalmist's reference to 'the scroll of the book' (Ps 40:7) links written text to covenantal obedience.

Senses
1. scroll / written roll A rolled document of papyrus or leather used for recording prophetic oracles, divine instructions, or other formal texts. Dominates the narrative of Jeremiah 36, where the noun occurs sixteen times as Baruch's scroll is written, read, confiscated, burned, and rewritten. Also designates the visionary scroll Ezekiel is commanded to eat (Ezek 2:9-3:3) and Zechariah's flying scroll of curse (Zech 5:1-2). Spanish 'rollo,' French 'rouleau,' and German 'Rolle' all preserve the physical sense of a rolled writing surface. 21×
