Torch, firebrand; a burning brand used for light, warfare, or as a visionary and metaphorical image of fire.
A vivid term for a burning torch, lappid appears in some of Scripture's most memorable scenes. In the covenant ceremony of Genesis 15:17, a smoking oven and a lappid of fire pass between the severed animal pieces -- a theophany sealing God's promise to Abraham. Gideon's three hundred break their jars to reveal torches in the night assault on Midian (Judg 7:16, 20). Samson ties torches to foxes' tails and sets Philistine grain ablaze (Judg 15:4-5). In vision the word shifts to supernatural fire: lightning at Sinai (Exod 20:18), angelic eyes like lappidei-esh (Dan 10:6), and the fiery darting of chariots at Nineveh's fall (Nah 2:5).

Senses
1. torch, firebrand A burning torch or firebrand, literal and figurative. Appears in the Abrahamic covenant theophany as a 'torch of fire' between the pieces (Gen 15:17), in Gideon's night attack (Judg 7:16, 20), and Samson's destruction of Philistine fields (Judg 15:4-5). Extended to lightning at Sinai (Exod 20:18), angelic eyes (Dan 10:6), flashing chariots (Nah 2:5), and Judah's conquering leaders (Zech 12:6). 14×
