A term denoting duality or doubling, most often in the dual form כִּפְלַיִם. Isaiah promises Jerusalem will receive double consolation for her suffering. Job's friends are told that true wisdom is 'double' to human understanding—God's ways exceed our categories by a factor of two. The word also describes Leviathan's formidable double jaws in Job 41.

1. sense 1 — Job 11:6 declares that sound wisdom is 'double in essence' (כִּפְלַיִם לְתוּשִׁיָּה)—far beyond what Job perceives. Job 41:13 [Eng. 41:5] asks who can penetrate 'the double of his bridle' (בְּכֶפֶל רִסְנוֹ), Leviathan's impenetrable jaw structure. Isaiah 40:2 promises that Jerusalem has 'received double for all her sins' (כִּפְלַיִם בְּכָל־חַטֹּאתֶיהָ), meaning full, abundant restoration.
