Kislev, the ninth month of the Jewish calendar (November-December)
A Babylonian-derived month name adopted during the exile, corresponding to late autumn. Kislev runs from mid-November to mid-December in the modern calendar. Nehemiah received his troubling report about Jerusalem's ruined walls in this month, and Zechariah dated one of his night visions to Kislev. The name reflects the broader adoption of Babylonian calendar terminology in post-exilic Judaism.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Nehemiah 1:1 places Nehemiah's pivotal conversation with Hanani 'in the month of Kislev' (בְּחֹדֶשׁ כִּסְלֵו/כִּסְלֵיו), setting in motion the Jerusalem rebuilding. Zechariah 7:1 dates a prophetic inquiry to the fourth year of Darius, in Kislev. Post-exilic literature shows clear use of Babylonian month names rather than the older Canaanite system (Bul, etc.). Translations consistently transliterate (Spanish Quisleu, French Kislev), recognizing this as technical calendar terminology preserved in Jewish tradition. 3×
