H3599 H3599
A bag or purse for carrying money or weights; used of honest and dishonest commerce alike.
Refers to a small bag or purse carried on the person, used both for holding commercial weights and for money. In its most vivid usage, Proverbs 1:14 depicts sinners enticing a youth with the promise of a shared purse, while Micah 6:11 denounces the 'bag of deceitful weights' used to cheat in the marketplace. The cognates across Semitic languages are strikingly consistent -- Arabic kis, Ethiopic kis, Aramaic kisa -- all pointing to the same everyday item of personal commerce. Isaiah 46:6 pictures idolaters lavishing gold from the purse to fashion a worthless idol.
Senses
1. bag, purse — A leather bag or pouch used for carrying either money or commercial weights. When holding weights, it appears in legal contexts condemning dishonest trade: 'You shall not have in your bag differing weights' (Deut 25:13), and 'a bag of deceitful weights' (Mic 6:11). When holding money, it functions as a purse -- the tempters' shared purse in Proverbs 1:14, and the gold lavished on idol-making in Isaiah 46:6. Spanish bolsa and English 'bag/purse' capture the dual function well. The Palmyrene Aramaic expression 'from his kis' meaning 'at his own expense' confirms how deeply embedded this word was in daily commercial life. 6×
