La raíz kbd significa 'pesado,' y el hígado fue nombrado así por ser el órgano más pesado — conexión preservada en los cognados árabe kabid y arameo kabda. La mayoría de las apariciones se encuentran en la legislación sacrificial sacerdotal, donde el 'apéndice del hígado' (yoteret ha-kaved) se quema sobre el altar (Éx 29:13, 22; Lv 3-9). Ezequiel 21:26 registra al rey de Babilonia consultando el hígado en la hepatoscopia. Proverbios 7:23 describe una flecha que atraviesa el hígado, y Lamentaciones 2:11 lo derrama en angustia.
