Yitshar (יִצְהָר, also rendered Izhar) was a son of Kohath, grandson of Levi, and founder of the Izharite clan within the Levitical priesthood. His genealogical significance is considerable: through his line came Korah, who led the famous rebellion against Moses (Num 16:1). The name appears consistently in Levitical genealogies across Exodus, Numbers, and Chronicles (Exod 6:18, 21; Num 3:19; 1 Chr 6:2; 23:12, 18). The Septuagint renders it Ισσααρ. Though the common noun yitshar means 'fresh oil,' the proper name here strictly identifies the ancestral Levite.
