circle, vault, horizon (of earth or heavens)
A noun denoting the circular vault or horizon of the cosmos. God 'sits above the circle of the earth' (Isa 40:22), 'inscribed a circle on the face of the deep' at creation (Prov 8:27), and 'walks on the vault of heaven' (Job 22:14). The Spanish círculo and French/German circle/vault glosses evoke both the two-dimensional horizon and the three-dimensional dome. This is cosmological language: the geometry of creation, where God's throne transcends the bounded sphere of the world.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Refers to the circular boundary or vault of the cosmos in three poetic contexts: God enthroned above the earth's circle (Isa 40:22), the circle inscribed at creation (Prov 8:27), and God's circuit of the heavens (Job 22:14). The multilingual glosses (circle, círculo, vault) reflect ancient cosmology's image of a bounded, vaulted world. The word evokes divine transcendence over created order. 3×
