Habor (river name in Mesopotamia)
A river in Upper Mesopotamia, flowing into the Euphrates from the east. It is called 'the river Gozan' (2 Kgs 17:6; 18:11) and appears in the account of the Assyrian deportation of Israelites. First Chronicles 5:26 lists 'Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan' (the first two may be scribal variants of the same name). The name is preserved across translations (Spanish Habor, Jabor; French Chavor). This is a geographic marker of exile: the place where Israel was scattered.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A river name in three deportation contexts (2 Kgs 17:6; 18:11; 1 Chr 5:26). The multilingual glosses uniformly transliterate the toponym (Habor, Jabor, Chavor). The river functions as a geographic referent for the Assyrian exile—a fixed point on the map of Israel's dispersion. 3×
