Tail — the hind extremity of an animal; figuratively the lowest, weakest, or most insignificant part
The noun זָנָב (zanav) denotes the tail of an animal, both literally and as a vivid figure for social and political insignificance. When God commands Moses to seize the serpent 'by the tail' (Exod 4:4), the physical sense is primary. But Deuteronomy 28:13, 44 transforms the image into a proverb of covenant status: obedience makes Israel 'the head,' disobedience makes her 'the tail.' Isaiah 9:14 explicitly glosses the metaphor — 'the elder and honored man is the head; the prophet who teaches lies is the tail.' Samson's foxes, tied tail to tail with torches (Judg 15:4), remain one of Scripture's most unforgettable images. Spanish 'cola' and French 'queue' serve for both literal and figurative uses.

Senses
1. tail; end, stump The literal tail of an animal — the physical hind appendage. Moses grasps the serpent by the tail (Exod 4:4), Samson ties foxes tail-to-tail with firebrands (Judg 15:4), and Isaiah describes the smoldering 'tails' (stumps) of two firebrands representing weakened kings (Isa 7:4). Spanish 'cola,' French 'queue,' and German 'Schwanz' all map directly. 11×
