Madness, folly viewed as irrational recklessness; used exclusively in Ecclesiastes to denote moral and intellectual insanity.
A feminine noun found only in the plural and exclusively in Ecclesiastes, where the Preacher sets out to examine wisdom alongside its opposite. The word captures not mere silliness but a deeper derangement of moral reasoning — the kind of folly that the wise person investigates precisely in order to reject. Spanish 'locura' and German 'Wahnsinn' both preserve the intensity: this is not ignorance but a willful departure from sense. In Eccl 9:3 it is paired with evil itself, revealing how the author sees madness as a spiritual and ethical condition, not merely a psychological one.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Madness as moral-intellectual folly — the irrational recklessness that stands opposed to wisdom. All four occurrences appear in Ecclesiastes where the Preacher investigates what is ultimately futile (Eccl 1:17; 2:12; 7:25; 9:3). Paired with sikhluth ('folly') and ra' ('evil'), the term denotes not clinical insanity but a willful refusal of right reason. The multilingual glosses uniformly translate with strong terms — Spanish 'locura,' French 'folie,' German 'Wahnsinn' — confirming its gravity. 4×
