Senses
1. crush, be crushed — To crush or be crushed, whether physically or by oppression and suffering. In Ps 10:10, the wicked crushes (yidkeh, Qal) the helpless who fall into his power; the Ketiv variant (wedakhah) is the same verb in consecutive perfect. In Ps 38:8, the psalmist says he is utterly crushed (wenidkeytiy, Niphal). In Ps 44:19, God has crushed (dikkhiytanu, Piel) Israel in the place of jackals. In Ps 51:8, God has crushed (dikkhiyta, Piel) the psalmist's bones. All share the semantic core of violent breaking or oppression. 5×

2. contrite (spiritually broken) — Contrite, broken in spirit -- the positive spiritual sense of a heart humbled before God. In Ps 51:17 (ET 51:19), the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart (wenidkeh, Niphal participle) God will not despise. Though etymologically the same root as 'crush,' the context transforms the meaning into a desirable state of spiritual humility. Glosses: arb munsahiq, deu contrite, kor tonghoe, spa contrito, hin kuchlaa huaa. 1×
