V-Qal-Imperf-3ms | 3mse  |  3× in 1 sense
to raid, attack, invade—military assault or incursion
This verb describes military raiding or attacking. It appears most notably in Genesis 49:19, in Jacob's blessing over Gad, with wordplay on the tribal name: 'Gad, a troop shall troop upon him, but he shall troop upon their heel' (attacking them in retreat). The alliteration in Hebrew (gad gedud yegudenu wehu yagud aqeb) is striking. In Habakkuk 3:16, it refers to an enemy who will attack 'us.' The verb may be denominative from gedud ('raiding band'), suggesting the action of a raiding party—swift, aggressive incursion rather than formal siege warfare.

Senses
1. sense 1 To raid, attack, or invade militarily. Genesis 49:19 uses it three times with wordplay: 'a troop shall raid him (yegudennu), but he shall raid (yagud) their heel.' Habakkuk 3:16 speaks of a people who will attack 'us' (yegudennu). Cross-linguistic glosses vary: English 'shall raid/shall raid him/who attacks us,' Spanish 'asaltará/lo asaltará/que lo atacará,' French and German use 'raid/bedrängt' forms. The verb conveys sudden military assault rather than sustained siege. Some scholars derive it from the noun gedud ('raiding band'), making this a denominative verb meaning 'to conduct a raid.'
