Ser embrutecido o necio como un animal; también: apacentar, dejar que el ganado paste en un campo.
Verbo denominativo de be'ir («bestia, ganado»), con dos perfiles semánticos bastante distintos. En su uso profético principal significa «ser embrutecido, necio, torpe de corazón», comportándose con la naturaleza irracional de un animal en vez de como un ser humano capaz de razonar. Isaías califica de «embrutecidos» a los consejeros de Egipto (Is 19:11), el salmista reprende a los insensatos del pueblo (Sal 94:8) y Jeremías condena repetidamente a quienes son «demasiado necios para conocer a Dios» (Jer 10:8, 14, 21). El segundo sentido, atestiguado en el Código de la Alianza (Éx 22:5), es agrícola: apacentar o dejar que el ganado propio paste en campo ajeno, un uso concreto y legal que conserva la conexión etimológica con el ganado.

2. Apacentar, hacer pastar — Apacentar, dejar que el ganado paste o consumir vegetación por pastoreo. Las formas Piel e Hifil están atestiguadas en el Código de la Alianza (Éx 22:5). El Hifil yav'er significa «hacer que sea pastado» (enviar los animales propios al campo ajeno), mientras que el Piel uvi'er significa «alimentar, apacentar».
