אֲרַע21 H0772
Earth, land (Aramaic); the physical ground or inhabited world, cognate of Hebrew 'erets'.
This Aramaic noun (אֲרַע, emphatic state אַרְעָא) is the direct cognate of Hebrew erets and carries the same dual sense of 'earth' as physical ground and 'land' as political territory. It appears almost exclusively in the Aramaic portions of Daniel and Ezra, where it features in Nebuchadnezzar's dream of the stone that fills the whole earth (Dan 2:35), the decree that every people on earth must tremble before Daniel's God (Dan 6:26), and the vision of four kingdoms arising from the earth (Dan 7:17). Ezra 5:11 uses it in the phrase 'God of heaven and earth.' The directional form arʿa can mean 'earthward, downward,' yielding 'inferior' in Dan 2:39.
Senses
1. earth, land (Aramaic) — The Aramaic noun for 'earth' or 'land,' functioning as the exact cognate of Hebrew erets. Found predominantly in Daniel's apocalyptic visions — the stone filling the whole earth (Dan 2:35), dominion extending over all the earth (Dan 4:1; 6:26) — and in Ezra's correspondence about the God of heaven and earth (Ezra 5:11). The emphatic state אַרְעָא dominates, while the directional form yields 'earthward/inferior' (Dan 2:39). Spanish 'tierra', French and German renderings confirm the straightforward earth/land semantic range. 21×
