Erez denotes the cedar, above all the celebrated cedar of Lebanon, which towers through the Hebrew Bible as both a practical building material and a potent literary symbol. Solomon's temple and palace were constructed with Lebanon cedar (1 Kgs 5:6-10; 6:15-18), making the tree virtually synonymous with royal architecture. As a growing tree, the cedar figures in poetry as the emblem of stately grandeur — 'the trees of the LORD are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted' (Ps 104:16) — yet also of doomed pride when the prophets announce that God will fell the tallest cedars (Isa 2:13; Ezek 31:3-14). In the Levitical purification ritual, cedarwood appears alongside hyssop and scarlet yarn (Lev 14:4, 49), suggesting symbolic associations with cleansing. Arabic arz ('pine/cedar'), Syriac arza, and Ethiopic arz confirm the ancient Semitic pedigree. Spanish cedro, French cedres, and German Zedern all point to one meaning.
