ephod, ephod-covering (priestly garment or its decorative band)
A term related to the priestly ephod, specifically referring to its skillfully woven band or to the covering/sheathing of idols with precious materials. Exodus uses it for the high priest's ephod band that held the garment in place. Isaiah employs it for the gold covering of cast images, parallel to silver plating of carved idols. The word shares the root with 'ephod' but supplies the construct and suffix forms, and extends metaphorically to any 'covering' or 'sheathing' that adorns.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Exodus 28:8 and 39:5 describe 'the skillfully woven band of the ephod' that secured the high priest's sacred garment, made with the same materials as the ephod itself—gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen. Isaiah 30:22 condemns idolatry: 'the covering of your cast images of gold'—using this term for the precious sheathing that makes idols attractive. The link between priestly vestments and idol-coverings is linguistic, not theological: both involve wrapping or overlaying with valuable material, but one serves true worship while the other represents misplaced devotion. 3×
