N-ms  |  5× in 1 sense
Fire, flame, or light of fire; used of literal fire and figuratively of divine judgment.
A poetic noun denoting fire viewed as flame and light rather than mere combustion. Isaiah employs it powerfully: the wicked are told to 'walk in the flame of your fire' (Isa 50:11), while Babylon's fire gives neither warmth nor light to sit by (Isa 47:14). The multilingual evidence converges neatly — English and Spanish render 'fire' or 'light-of,' while French captures the luminous aspect with 'lumiere.' All five occurrences appear in prophetic contexts where fire serves as a vehicle for divine warning or judgment.

Senses
1. sense 1 Fire conceived as visible flame and radiant light. Isaiah uses it for the self-kindled fire of the wicked (Isa 50:11), the warming fire whose light one enjoys (Isa 44:16), and the consuming fire of judgment (Isa 47:14). In Isa 31:9 and Ezek 5:2 it denotes literal fire in contexts of national catastrophe. The Spanish 'fuego' and 'luz-de' together capture the dual flame-and-light quality that distinguishes this word from the common אֵשׁ.
