Señor, amo: como título divino (Adonai, Señor Dios) y como tratamiento respetuoso a un superior humano.
Adon es una de las palabras de mayor peso teológico en la Biblia hebrea. En su uso abrumadoramente dominante, funciona como título divino Adonai ('mi Señor'), el sustituto oral del Tetragrama YHWH, que expresa la soberanía de Dios y su relación personal de alianza con Israel (Gn 15:2, 'Oh Señor YHWH'). La vocalización masorética distingue deliberadamente la referencia divina de la humana. En un puñado de pasajes conserva su significado secular más antiguo de 'señor' o 'amo,' dirigiéndose a un superior humano con deferencia (Jos 3:11; Jue 6:15).
