Gold — the precious metal, whether as material substance, currency, or symbol of supreme value
The noun χρυσός (chrysos) refers to gold as a precious metal in its various ancient uses: as a material for sacred objects, as a medium of exchange, and as a measure of ultimate value. The Magi bring gold to the infant Jesus (Matt 2:11), ranking it first among their gifts. Jesus forbids the Twelve from carrying gold on their mission (Matt 10:9). The Pharisees' oath-casuistry about gold on the temple altar is exposed as absurd (Matt 23:16-17). Peter declares that believers were redeemed not with perishable things like gold and silver but with the precious blood of Christ (1 Pet 1:18). Spanish 'oro' and French 'or' are exact equivalents across all registers.

Senses
1. gold Gold as a precious metal, encompassing material gold used in gifts and sacred objects (Matt 2:11, the Magi's offering; Rev 17:4; 18:12, 16, Babylon's adornment), gold as currency or wealth (Matt 10:9, the mission charge; Acts 3:6; 20:33; 1 Pet 1:18), and gold in temple-oath arguments (Matt 23:16-17, gold of the temple versus the temple that sanctifies). James 5:3 warns that hoarded gold will corrode as testimony against the rich. Spanish 'oro,' French 'or,' and German 'Gold' all map directly, reflecting gold's universal cultural currency as the standard of supreme material value. 10×
