χρίω G5548
to anoint — to consecrate or commission by applying oil, signifying divine appointment
Chrio is the verb from which Christos ('the Anointed One') derives, and every New Testament occurrence carries a strong theological charge. It appears 5 times, each referring to God's act of anointing: Jesus reads Isaiah's declaration 'the Spirit of the Lord has anointed me' in the Nazareth synagogue (Luke 4:18); the early church confesses that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:27; 10:38); Paul speaks of God anointing believers into Christ (2 Cor 1:21); and Hebrews cites Psalm 45, 'God has anointed you with the oil of gladness' (Heb 1:9). Spanish 'ungir' and German 'salben' both preserve the concrete image of oil applied to a person set apart.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To anoint as an act of divine consecration and commissioning, always with God as the implied or explicit agent. Describes the Spirit's anointing of Jesus for his prophetic mission (Luke 4:18), God's designation of Jesus as the Holy Servant-Messiah (Acts 4:27; 10:38), God's anointing of believers who are established in Christ (2 Cor 1:21), and the exaltation-anointing of the Son with the oil of gladness above his companions (Heb 1:9). All 5 NT uses carry a Christological or pneumatological weight, as confirmed by the Spanish 'ungir,' French 'oindre,' and German 'salben.' 5×
