silence, put to silence, render speechless; muzzle, restrain from eating
1. silence, put to silence, render speechless — To silence a person or entity, to render speechless or put to shame into silence; the figurative extension of the muzzling metaphor applied to speech. Covers both active and passive uses. Active: Jesus 'silenced' the Sadducees in debate (Matt 22:34 ephimosen), and doing good is God's will so as 'to silence the ignorance of foolish people' (1 Pet 2:15 phimoun). Passive/middle: the man without a wedding garment 'was silenced' (Matt 22:12 ephimothe), and Jesus commands the unclean spirit and the storm to 'Be silent! / Be muzzled!' (Mark 1:25, Luke 4:35 phimotheti -- aorist passive imperative; Mark 4:39 pephimoso -- perfect middle/passive imperative). The use with demons and the sea is metaphorical muzzling -- commanding obedient silence. Multilingual glosses converge on silencing: Arabic askata/uskut/ihda' ('silence/be quiet/calm down'), Spanish silencio/enmudece/callate, French faire taire, Hebrew hishtiq/he'alem ('silence/be mute'), Korean ip makda/jamjamhara ('shut the mouth/be quiet'), Hindi chup hona/karna ('become/make silent'). 6×

2. muzzle, restrain from eating — To muzzle an animal, preventing it from eating while working; the literal, original sense of phimoo. Used in quotations of Deut 25:4: 'You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain' (1 Cor 9:9 kemoseis, 1 Tim 5:18 phimoseis). These occurrences apply the OT agricultural law to the right of Christian workers to receive material support. Multilingual glosses confirm the literal muzzling sense: Arabic tukammim ('you muzzle'), Spanish pondras bozal ('you will put a muzzle'), German den Mund stopfen ('stop the mouth'), Hebrew tachsom ('you shall muzzle'), Korean megura/jaegal-mulliji ('put on a gag/muzzle'), Hindi thuthani bandhega ('tie a muzzle'). French museler also means 'to muzzle.' The verb form kemoseis in 1 Cor 9:9 is an alternative future form of the same verb. 2×
