hospitality, the practice of welcoming and caring for strangers or guests
φιλοξενία (literally 'love of strangers') denotes the virtue of welcoming guests and strangers into one's home and life. In the ancient Mediterranean world, where inns were scarce and travel dangerous, hospitality was both a moral obligation and a practical necessity for the spread of the gospel. Romans 12:13 urges believers to 'pursue hospitality' (τὴν φιλοξενίαν διώκοντες) as part of genuine Christian love. Hebrews 13:2 adds a striking motivation: 'Do not neglect hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels unawares'—evoking Abraham's welcome of the three visitors at Mamre.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both New Testament uses present φιλοξενία as a Christian virtue to be actively cultivated. Romans places it in a list of practical expressions of love within the Christian community; Hebrews connects it to the patriarchal tradition of welcoming divine messengers. The German Gastfreundschaft ('guest-friendship') and Spanish hospitalidad both preserve the active, relational character of this practice—not mere tolerance but eager welcome of the stranger. 2×
