The verb hyperecho (literally 'to hold above') denotes superiority in either rank or quality. Paul uses it in both social and spiritual registers: governing authorities are 'superior' powers to be respected (Rom 13:1), fellow believers are to be esteemed as surpassing oneself in honor (Phil 2:3), knowing Christ is of surpassing value compared to all else (Phil 3:8), and the peace of God surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7). Peter likewise urges submission to the emperor as 'supreme' (1 Pet 2:13). Spanish superior and French surpasser both capture the dual force of rank and transcendence that this versatile word carries.
