Running over, overflowing; exceeding capacity, used of abundant generosity (Luke 6:38)
This passive participle describes liquid overflowing a container that can't hold it all. Jesus uses it in Luke 6:38 to promise extravagant divine reciprocity for generous giving: the measure you receive will be 'running over,' pressed down and shaken together so that more fits in, yet still spilling over the brim. The image is of abundance exceeding all limits. All major translations preserve the overflowing, spilling-over imagery.

Senses
1. sense 1 In Luke 6:38, Jesus promises that generous givers will receive a measure 'pressed down, shaken together, running over.' The participle describes grain or liquid filling a container beyond capacity so it spills over the rim. Spanish 'rebosante' (overflowing), French 'déborder' (to overflow), and the Greek transliteration all preserve this vivid imagery of abundance that cannot be contained. The promise is hyperabundant reciprocity—divine generosity so lavish it exceeds the vessel's ability to hold it.
