The political metaphor is vivid: conversion grants citizenship in God's commonwealth. In the Greco-Roman world, citizenship conferred rights, protections, and identity. Paul reverses the Gentiles' former status: once outsiders to Israel's covenant, they now share full citizenship with Jewish believers in the people of God.
