συγκερ-άννῡμι G4786
To mix together, blend; to unite or combine intimately into one
Συγκεράννυμι means to mix or blend together, to combine elements into a unified whole. In 1 Corinthians 12:24, Paul uses this verb in describing how God 'composed' (mixed together) the body, giving greater honor to the less honorable parts—the church as a blended unity of diverse members. In Hebrews 4:2, the verb appears in a difficult phrase about the word not benefiting hearers because it was 'not united by faith' with those who heard—the gospel message must be blended with faith to be effective. Both uses emphasize intimate combination, whether of body parts into an organism or of message with receptive faith.
Senses
1. sense 1 — 1 Corinthians 12:24 uses the aorist indicative (συνεκέρασεν, 'God mixed together/composed') describing God's design of the body as an integrated whole from diverse parts. Hebrews 4:2 uses the perfect passive participle (συγκεκερασμένους, 'having been mixed together/united') in a complex construction about faith and hearing. Classical Greek used the term for mixing wine, blending ingredients, tempering substances, and metaphorically for combining qualities or elements into harmonious wholes. 2×
