N-ANP  |  7× in 1 sense
Elements; the basic components of the world, whether elemental physical substances, rudimentary principles of learning, or cosmic spiritual powers.
Stoicheion originally meant a shadow on a sundial marking the hour, then came to denote any basic unit in a series — a letter of the alphabet, an element of physical matter, or a first principle of knowledge. In the New Testament, it carries theological weight in two distinct directions. Paul warns against returning to 'the elemental things of the world' (Gal 4:3, 9; Col 2:8, 20), likely referring to the basic regulatory principles — whether Jewish Torah observances or pagan cosmic forces — that once held believers in bondage before Christ. The author of Hebrews uses it differently, chiding readers who need someone to teach them 'the elements' (basic ABCs) of God's oracles again (Heb 5:12). German 'Elemente' and Spanish 'elementos' both preserve the same breadth of meaning.

Senses
1. elements The basic components, elementary principles, or fundamental constituents of the world. This single sense covers overlapping NT applications: the rudimentary principles of religious instruction, the 'ABCs' that mature believers should have moved beyond (Heb 5:12); and the 'elemental things of the world' — the basic ordering principles (whether Torah regulations, cosmic powers, or both) that once enslaved humanity before Christ's liberation (Gal 4:3, 9; Col 2:8, 20). Paul's argument in Galatians and Colossians is that believers have died with Christ to these stoicheia and must not submit to them again. Spanish 'elementos' and German 'Elemente' both preserve this polysemous breadth within a single lexical item.
