Σπένδω means to pour out a drink offering (libation), a ritual act in ancient worship where wine was poured on an altar or ground as an offering to God. Paul uses this imagery metaphorically to describe his own life and ministry as being poured out like a sacrificial libation. In Philippians 2:17, he expresses readiness to be poured out as a drink offering accompanying the Philippians' faith. In 2 Timothy 4:6, sensing his approaching death, Paul declares 'I am already being poured out'—his life is the final libation of his ministry.
