ῥαν-τίζω G4472
To sprinkle, especially with blood or water for ritual purification; to cleanse ceremonially.
A verb of ritual action rooted in the Levitical sacrificial system, where the sprinkling of blood or water effected ceremonial purification. All four New Testament occurrences appear in Hebrews, where the author systematically contrasts old covenant sprinkling rites with the superior cleansing accomplished by Christ's blood. The sprinkling of blood and water by Moses at Sinai (Heb 9:19, 21) and the ashes of the red heifer (Heb 9:13) are shown to be shadows of the believer's heart being 'sprinkled clean from an evil conscience' (Heb 10:22). Spanish 'rociar' and French 'asperger' both preserve the liturgical register of the action.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To scatter liquid--typically blood or water--in droplets upon a person or object for the purpose of ritual purification or covenant ratification. The verb echoes the LXX's rendering of Levitical sprinkling rites (cf. Lev 14:7; Num 19:18). In Hebrews 9:13, the sprinkling of goat blood and heifer ashes sanctifies 'for the purification of the flesh'; in 9:19 and 9:21, Moses sprinkles both the scroll and the tabernacle vessels with blood. The climactic use in Heb 10:22 transfers the image from external ritual to internal reality: believers approach God with hearts 'sprinkled from an evil conscience.' The German 'besprengen' and Spanish 'rociar' both denote scattering liquid in fine drops, preserving the ceremonial overtone. 4×
