προσηλόω G4338
to nail to, to fasten with nails, to affix firmly by nailing
A compound verb intensifying basic nailing with the sense of nailing something to a surface. Classical usage included nailing to crosses (crucifixion), nailing boards to walls, or metaphorically fixing the soul to material things. Paul uses it in Colossians 2:14 with stunning imagery: God canceled the written code with its regulations, having nailed it to the cross. The verb transforms the cross from instrument of shame to place where legal obligations are permanently affixed and thereby nullified—nailed there with Christ, the law's condemning power is removed.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The glosses preserve the nailing imagery ('having nailed,' 'clavándolo,' 'annageln'). Paul's metaphor is dense: the certificate of debt (our record of legal violations) was not merely torn up but nailed to the cross with Christ. This public nailing both displays the debt (it's genuinely ours) and cancels it (Christ bore it). What was nailed to the cross died there, including the law's power to condemn those in Christ. 1×
