πρόθεσις G4286
Purpose, deliberate resolve, or plan; also the setting forth of the showbread before God.
Built from the verb protithemi ('to set before'), this noun carries two quite distinct senses in the New Testament. Most frequently it denotes God's eternal purpose or a person's settled resolve: Paul speaks of God's prothesis that works all things according to the counsel of his will (Rom 8:28; Eph 1:11; 2 Tim 1:9). The Spanish propósito and German Vorsatz both convey deliberate intention. In its older, more concrete sense the word refers to the ritual act of setting bread before God — the 'bread of the Presence' or showbread that David ate in his hour of need (Matt 12:4; Mark 2:26; Luke 6:4), and the table of showbread in the tabernacle (Heb 9:2). The two senses share the root image of placing something out front, whether a plan before the mind or loaves before the Lord.
Senses
1. purpose / resolve — A deliberate purpose, plan, or resolve, whether divine or human. Predominantly used of God's eternal decree and predetermining counsel (Rom 8:28; 9:11; Eph 1:11; 3:11; 2 Tim 1:9), but also of human intention, as Barnabas urging the Antioch believers to remain faithful 'with purpose of heart' (Acts 11:23) and Paul's travel plans (Acts 27:13). Spanish propósito and French proposition capture the sense of a settled design placed before oneself. 8×

2. setting forth / presentation (of bread) — The act of setting forth or presenting, specifically the 'bread of the Presence' (showbread) laid on the sacred table in the tabernacle or temple. A cultic-ritual term appearing in the Synoptic accounts of David eating the consecrated bread (Matt 12:4; Mark 2:26; Luke 6:4) and in the description of the tabernacle furnishings (Heb 9:2). Spanish presentación/proposición preserves the concrete spatial nuance of placing something before God. 4×
