Far away, at a distance; used of spatial or figurative remoteness.
An adverb indicating distance or remoteness, whether literal or metaphorical. Jesus twice quotes Isaiah's rebuke that 'this people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me' (Matt 15:8; Mark 7:6), using porro to express spiritual distance. Luke employs it spatially: sending an embassy while still 'far away' (Luke 14:32) and Jesus appearing to go 'farther' on the Emmaus road (Luke 24:28). The word bridges physical and relational distance with equal ease.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Far, far away, at a distance -- spatially or metaphorically. The Isaiah quotation in Matt 15:8 and Mark 7:6 deploys it for the heart's distance from God, a figurative use that Spanish 'lejos' and French 'loin' both capture cleanly. Luke 14:32 pictures a king sending delegates while the enemy is still far off, and Luke 24:28 describes Jesus as making to go farther along the road to Emmaus. The comparative form porrōteron (Luke 24:28) intensifies the spatial sense. All four NT occurrences play on the tension between proximity and distance -- whether of hearts to God or persons to each other. 4×
