Riches, wealth -- both material abundance and, metaphorically, the immeasurable fullness of divine grace and glory
A noun for wealth that operates on two registers in the New Testament. In the Synoptic parables, riches are a spiritual hazard: the 'deceitfulness of riches' chokes the word (Matt 13:22; Mark 4:19; Luke 8:14). But Paul transforms the term into a vehicle for divine superabundance: 'the riches of his glory' (Rom 9:23; Eph 3:16), 'the riches of his grace' (Eph 1:7; 2:7), and 'the unsearchable riches of Christ' (Eph 3:8). This theological metaphor is distinctive to the Pauline corpus and gives the word a range broader than its classical Greek sense. Spanish riqueza, French richesse, and German Reichtum all serve for both the material and metaphorical uses.

Senses
1. riches Wealth and abundance, used concretely for material prosperity (Matt 13:22; Mark 4:19, where riches choke the word) and metaphorically for divine fullness (Rom 9:23, 'riches of glory'; Eph 3:8, 'unsearchable riches of Christ'). The metaphorical extension is characteristically Pauline. Spanish riqueza, French richesse, and German Reichtum cover both registers. 22×
