πλᾰτύν-ω G4115
to widen, to broaden, to enlarge; to make something wider or more spacious, literally or figuratively
This verb means to make wide or broad, to enlarge. Jesus criticizes scribes and Pharisees who 'widen' their phylacteries to appear more devout (Matt 23:5). Paul tells the Corinthians that his heart 'has been enlarged' toward them—opened wide with affection (2 Cor 6:11)—and urges them to 'be enlarged' in their hearts toward him in return (2 Cor 6:13). The word works both literally (making physical objects wider) and metaphorically (expanding emotional capacity or openness).
Senses
1. sense 1 — Multilingual glosses emphasize expansion: English 'be-enlarged/has-been-enlarged/they-widen', Spanish 'ensanchan/ensanchaos/se-ha-ensanchado', French 'élargir', German 'weit-gemacht/πλατύνουσιν'. The lexicon defines it as 'widen' with meanings including widening territory, dilating pupils, being 'opened/relieved from care' (LXX), and amplifying speech. Matt 23:5 refers to literally widening phylacteries. 2 Cor 6:11, 13 use it metaphorically for hearts being enlarged/opened wide in affection. Both literal physical widening and metaphorical emotional expansion are present. 3×
