πλάσσω G4111
to form, mold, or shape; to create by fashioning soft material
A verb describing the work of an artist shaping soft materials—clay, wax, earth—into desired forms. Classical usage often pictured the potter at the wheel. Paul employs this imagery theologically. In Romans 9:20, the clay cannot question the potter: 'Has the potter no right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?' In 1 Timothy 2:13, the verb recalls Genesis creation: 'Adam was formed first, then Eve'—God as divine craftsman shaping humanity from the dust.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To form or shape by molding, used both for divine creation and God's sovereign right over what He makes. In 1 Timothy, it recalls Genesis—God forming Adam from the ground, then forming Eve. In Romans, Paul uses potter imagery: the one who forms clay has absolute right to shape it for whatever purpose He chooses. The German 'bilden' (form) and French 'former' capture the artisan's work—deliberate shaping of raw material into purposeful design, whether human creation or sovereign election. 2×
