περιτίθημι G4060
To place around, put on, or set upon; used of clothing someone, enclosing something, or metaphorically bestowing honor or dishonor.
Peritithemi combines peri (around) and tithemi (to place) — to put something around or upon someone. The NT uses it in strikingly concrete scenes of the Passion: a purple robe placed around Jesus in mockery (Matt 27:28, Mark 15:17, John 19:2), a sponge of vinegar placed on a reed and lifted to his mouth (Matt 27:48, Mark 15:36). In parables, it describes a landowner setting a hedge around a vineyard (Matt 21:33, Mark 12:1). Paul then pivots the word to metaphor in 1 Corinthians 12:23, where members deemed 'less honorable' are clothed with greater honor.
Senses
1. place around, put on — To place or put something around, upon, or on a person or object. In the Passion narratives, this verb describes the soldiers placing a purple cloak on Jesus (Matt 27:28, Mark 15:17, John 19:2) and putting a vinegar-soaked sponge on a reed to reach his mouth (Matt 27:48, Mark 15:36). In the vineyard parables, it describes setting a fence or hedge around a vineyard (Matt 21:33, Mark 12:1). Paul employs it metaphorically in 1 Cor 12:23-24 for 'clothing' less honorable body parts with greater dignity. Spanish 'poner alrededor' and German 'aufsetzen/anlegen' capture both the circular placement and the act of dressing. 8×
