Heaven, sky; the visible firmament above and the divine dwelling place or realm of God
Greek ouranos spans two conceptual zones that English splits into 'sky' and 'heaven.' In the New Testament's 278 occurrences, it can denote the physical expanse where birds fly and stars shine (Matt 6:26), the firmament that will one day pass away (Matt 5:18), or the transcendent dwelling of God and destination of the faithful (Matt 6:20). Jesus frequently pairs it with earth to encompass all reality: 'Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven' (Matt 6:10). Spanish cielo, French ciel, and German Himmel each preserve this same productive ambiguity between the physical and the divine.

Senses
1. [split] heaven, sky, heavens The full semantic range of ouranos, covering both the visible sky or firmament overhead and the transcendent realm where God dwells. In the Gospels, it appears as the domain of birds (Matt 6:26), the counterpart of earth in cosmic scope (Matt 5:18), and the seat of divine authority and reward (Matt 6:20). Renderings like Spanish cielo and German Himmel mirror this same dual physical-divine coverage in a single lexeme.
